Last year 2.5 tonnes of plastic waste were generated in the UK. Only 44% of that waste was recycled. Worldwide over 380 million tonnes of plastic are produced each year, and that is set to double by 2034.

COP27 is currently taking place in Sharm El Sheik and will finish on the 18th of November. This year the sponsor for COP27 is Coca-Cola, a company which is the world’s worst plastic polluter according to research conducted by Changing Markets Foundation. When the sponsorship was announced earlier in September, Coca Cola released a statement saying:

“We are prepared to do our part, starting with helping to collect and recycle a bottle or can for everyone we sell. Our support for COP27 is in line with our science-based target to reduce absolute carbon emissions by 25% by 2030.”

How can the UK tackle plastic pollution?

One way the UK could tackle plastic pollution is by introducing a plastic bottle deposit scheme, which is something other countries have already put in place.
