How safe is banger racing?

Banger racing has been popular with thrill-seekers since the 1950s, originating in the north of the UK.

As racetracks in the north closed down, the adrenaline-inducing sport found a new home in East Anglia.

At first glance, banger racing appears to go against standard health and safety rules. But just how dangerous is this seemingly outrageous sport?
